Present Clinical and Academic Appointments
Dr Ang Teck Kee is a Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist with more than 15 years of clinical experience. Even during his undergraduate days in NUS, he was actively involved in organising volunteer work and was awarded a Volunteer Appreciation Award by Dover Park Hospice in 2001. He graduated from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2004 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS).
During his National Service stint from 2006 to 2008 where he served as a military doctor in the Republic of Singapore Navy, he was awarded a Letter of Commendation by Chief Navy Medical Service for resourcefulness and initiative in casualty management when he went out of his way to save a civilian (non military personnel) life.
He obtained his post-graduate Internal Medicine degree, Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (United Kingdom) in 2010.
He underwent his Cardiology Advanced Specialty Training in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), Singapore from 2011-2014 and was accredited by Singapore Medical Council (SMC) and Ministry of Health Singapore (MOHS) as a specialist in Cardiology in 2014.
In 2016, he was awarded the Human Manpower Development Program (HMDP) scholarship by Ministry of Health, Singapore to further sub-specialize in the field of Interventional Cardiology at Liverpool District Hospital, New South Wales, Sydney. He spent a year under the mentorship of world-renown Professors and experts in Interventional Cardiology and was trained in the latest advances in the Interventional Cardiology arena. Liverpool District Hospital (LDH) was a major tertiary hospital serving as the referral centre for 5 district hospitals in the New South Wales area. He gained extensive experience in treating patients with complex left main, bifurcation, bypass graft lesions and chronic total occlusions using the latest in adjunctive interventional techniques such as rotational atherectomy and intra-coronary imaging eg Intra-Vascular UltraSound (IVUS) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). He was also actively involved in research during his HMDP rotation at LDH, with the results of the research presented during the prestigious CSANZ 2017 (Cardiac Society Australia & New Zealand) conference held in Perth, Australia.
He subsequently returned to Singapore in 2017, working as a Certified Senior Interventional Cardiologist, providing 24/7 acute heart attack interventional service in KTPH. He has since taught and mentored up and coming Interventional Cardiology fellows rotating through KTPH Cardiology in his role as an Interventional Cardiologist in KTPH. To date, he has performed more than 3,000 invasive coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention procedures, mostly through the less invasive radial (wrist) artery approach. He is very well versed in the use of ultrasound guided puncture of artery, which is extremely useful in certain subset of patients with difficult to access arterial system.
Dr Ang is a strong believer of using the latest technological advances in Cardiology in his practice. An example is his use of anatomical snuff box (base of thumb) artery access for minimally invasive angioplasty (during his time in KTPH), which is an up and coming field in Cardiology. He is both proficient in radial (wrist) artery as well as femoral (groin) artery approach for minimally invasive angioplasty (stenting).
Apart from his interest in complex coronary intervention, his other interests include stroke prevention in at risk cardiac patients with abnormal heart rhythms (example: atrial fibrillation). This has led him to become the Chairman of the Anti-Thrombotic Workgroup in KTPH (use of blood thinners is frequently used to reduce the incidence of clot formation and hence stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation)
Dr Ang’s passion and belief are in education for both doctors and nurses. His past and present academic appointments include Continuous Medical Education (CME) lead in KTPH Department of Cardiology, core faculty member of the National Healthcare Group (NHG) Cardiology Senior Residency program, core faculty member of the NHG Internal Medicine Residency program, Clinical Educator at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (YLLSoM) National University of Singapore (NUS), Clinical Teacher at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCSoM), Preceptor for Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Clinical Supervisor Internship program, Nursing Education Lead for KTPH Cardiology Department, Instructor for Life Support Course for Nurses (LSCN) KTPH, Clinical Supervisor and Medical Practitioner Champion (Khoo Teck Puat Hospital) for National Collaborative Prescribing Programme (NCPP).
Despite his move to private practice, he continues to nurture the younger generation of doctors by returning to KTPH weekly as a Visiting Consultant, contributing both to the 24/7 acute heart attack interventional service in KTPH, as well as education and training of the next generation of Cardiologists and Interventional Cardiologists.
Dr Ang is also actively involved in clinical research and was the co-investigator in numerous international and local clinical trials like ODYSSEY, AMGEN, FOURIER, TICA-45, MASTER DAPT, PARADISE MI, PITRI, Sing-Xad, PACS, PACS II. He has written articles on various Cardiology issues, examples include the management of arterial access site (example: anatomical snuff box access) following invasive coronary procedures, intense multiple blood thinners useage in heart attacks due to blood clot laden coronary artery, which have been published in international peer-reviewed journals. He is also invited regularly to be both speaker and faculty in major local and international cardiology conferences. On a more personal note, Dr Ang strongly believes that the care and attention given to every patient he treats, should be the same as that he would deliver to his own parents. This can be seen by the continuous awards he received during his time in KTPH, receiving the Service Champion award in 2015, 2016 and 2018.
